VISION & MISSION ...
The James Moody Scholarship Fund represents a long-standing desire by James & Linda Moody to create opportunities for the next generation of Jazz masters by providing financial assistance for students who demonstrate outstanding ability, good character and for whom the scholarship would make a difference; a major goal is to help those who might not otherwise be able to pursue a higher education and to inspire college and graduate students to become mentors themselves, in addition to pursuing excellent musicianship.
ELIGIBILITY
Eligibility for the James Moody Scholarship is limited to fully matriculated sophomore applicants in the Jazz Studies program at the Conservatory of Music at Purchase College. The Scholarship supplies financial, mentoring, and career support in the final two years of undergraduate study. The James Moody Scholar is selected by the Director of Jazz Studies and designated faculty in close consultation with James and Linda Moody. Criteria for selection for the honor include the student's demonstrated musical excellence, academic achievement, high standard of professionalism, personal conduct and collegiality, potential for contributing to the Jazz performance field, and financial need.

HISTORY & SCHOLARS ...
On March 26, 2007, at a very memorable "Moody & Friends" concert event at B. B. King Blues Club & Grill in Manhattan, James & Linda Moody announced the first-ever official Moody Scholars at the Conservatory of Music at Purchase College-SUNY: Max Darche, an outstanding trumpeter, and Andrew Gould, an excellent saxophonist.
The March 2007 event represents the continuing advancement and success of the James Moody Scholarship Fund. The evening was made possible through the generous contributions of time and talent by many musicians and other individuals, organizations and businesses. (More are listed on this website's "How to Contribute" page.)
The James Moody Scholarship Fund began in 2005, with a "Saxophone Spectacular" concert held on April 9 of that year at the Performing Arts Center at Purchase College-SUNY, in Westchester, New York. This "Saxophone Spectacular" celebrated Moody's 80th birthday and inaugurated the James Moody Scholarship Fund. Jon Faddis served as Music Director, working with Todd Coolman to assemble and coordinate an all-star line-up of saxophone greats as well as promising young saxophone students.
In April 2006, another James Moody Scholaship Fund concert was held. Organized by Todd Coolman, the 2006 concert featured James Moody with dear friends Frank Wess and Jimmy Heath, among others, and was held at the Conservatory of Music at Purchase College.
As of 2007, the James Moody Scholarship Fund reached its minimum $100,000 endowment. The goal is to continue to grow the endowment to enable the granting of full scholarships to Moody Scholars and to support continued opportunities for the next generation of jazz masters.
